In 2021, I started a project in which I wanted to create a “sound-print” of the landscape in which I was born. I asked myself, what does my Prekmurje sound like? Over the two-year creative process, the Pejsaži of Prekmurje was born, combining the diverse sounds of nature, the dialect poetry and prose of local literary creators, and my own inner experiences of the landscape I grew up in. The compositions were created in a combination of inspirations from different layers and angles, with the intention to explore and deepen my own relationship to the places I left behind. The project is at the same time an “archival” record of the soundscape, which changes from day to day, consequently losing some sounds and rebuilding others.
Thinking about this, I wonder: ‘Will the sounds of the Pejsažev of Prekmurje still be recognisable 100 years from now?’
PEJSAŽI PREKMURJA (THE LANDSCAPES OF PERKMURJE)
Every landscape has its own character and its own sound.
In Prekmurje, both the landscape and its inhabitants have shaped and preserved their distinctive identity through historical isolation. The poems of Prekmurje represent the sonority of the region in which the author grew up. In doing so, they carefully and sensitively reveal the many layers and characteristics of the Pannonian countryside, which is told in small, almost imperceptible stories. In response to the regional landscape, the local inhabitants record their inspirations in a distinct linguistic dialect. This has also been preserved in literature throughout history.
The poetry of Prekmurje appeals to us in many ways. Texts by Prekmurje authors (D. Šarotar, F. Lainšček, M. Vincetič, M. Kranjec, J. Novak, etc.) are melodiously blended into music inspired by sound recordings of nature and the artistic expression of the author.
To really listen to them, they require a calm body and mind. The result is the silence that is necessary in art for words to connect and a poem to be born. It is a space from which music is born and an opportunity for the listener to be invited into the auditory world of the invisible waves of the Pejsaž of Prekmurje.
